What Is Dredging?

Dredging is a process that creates a more sustainable shoreline for boating use. Once dredging is complete, your shoreline will be safer, cleaner, and deep enough for your boat to dock. Dredging is a great way to cut down a muddy or eroding shoreline and offers many benefits as well.

How Is Dredging Helpful?

Dredging creates a safer atmosphere for swimmers, boats, and future construction. When you dredge your river or lake shoreline, you will reap many benefits, such as:

  • A better shoreline for future dock construction
  • Safer water levels for boat docking
  • Improved water quality
  • Removal of silt and sediment
  • Prevention of shoreline erosion

What Does Dredging Consist Of?

There are two more popular types of dredging that can be performed—mechanical dredging and hydraulic dredging. At Knoxville Barge, we can perform both of these for our customers.

  • Mechanical dredging uses special machinery to loosen up sediment and silt. Mechanical dredging works well for a wide variety of shorelines, whether rocky or soft.
  • Hydraulic dredging uses a vacuum-like machine to remove sediment and silt. This type of dredging can be faster and cheaper, but is not always feasible or allowed in certain locations.

My Shoreline Has Been Dredged—Now What?

Once your shoreline has been dredged, the team of marine contractors at Knoxville Barge will secure the soil with varying stabilization methods, such as:

  • Riprap & river rock construction – created with rocks made of granite, limestone, or any other stone that gives the look that the customer desires.
  • Seawall & retaining wall construction – created by building a wall made of concrete, brick, steel, vinyl, wood, boulders, or other materials.
